Who is fromis_9?

fromis_9 is a K-pop girl group under ASND Entertainment.

The group was formed through a reality survival television program called Idol School, where 41 female contestants, referred to as students, were mentored by various teachers and competed over the course of eleven weeks for the top nine spots to debut. The group’s name, fromis_9, originates from the phrase “from Idol School,” with its close pronunciation to the English word “promise” hinting at the promise made by the girls to become the best idols for their fans.

After the release of their pre-debut single “Glass Shoes,” fromis_9 officially debuted with “To Heart” on January 24, 2018. Their subsequent releases, “DKDK” and “Love Bomb,” further solidified the group’s signature that persists to this day: energetic choreographies and dynamic yet emotional singing.

A year after debut, on that same special 24th of January, their fandom was officially named “flover.” Since then, we, flovers, have grown together with the group, appreciating their chemistry and indulging in fromis_9’s diverse range of talents.

As the members matured, so did their music. Retro and dance-pop took over as fromis_9’s main trademarks from 2020 onwards. Some of their biggest hits from this modern era include “WE GO,” “DM,” and “Supersonic”. Between singles, albums, drama OSTs, and collaborations, fromis_9 today boasts an expansive catalogue of over 70 tracks, with “LIKE YOU BETTER” and the remake “White Memories” as their latest releases in 2025.

During this journey, a few bumps in the road were bound to arise. In August of 2022, following “Stay This Way” promotions, member Jang Gyuri departed from the group to pursue her dreams as an actress, leaving fromis_9 as an eight-member team. In Gyuri’s final letter as a fromis_9 member, she thanked flovers for believing in and supporting her, stating she would “also become a flover and support fromis_9 together.”

On December 31, 2024, fromis_9’s exclusive contract with Pledis Entertainment expired. The following month, five members—Hayoung, Jiwon, Chaeyoung, Nagyung, and Jiheon—moved to the newly established agency ASND, determined to continue fromis_9’s legacy under the same name. Saerom, Jisun, and Seoyeon decided to pursue individual paths.
