PART 3 – FLOVER ANALYSIS
Taking a look at flovers and their biases (favorite members), the votes have been weighted depending on how many members were chosen as their favorites by a given flover, as explained in part 2.1.
3.1 Gender x Bias
Out of the 886 participants of our survey, 51.6% are male, 41.0% are female and 4.2% are non-binary. The remaining respondents preferred not to disclose their gender.
Hayoung, Jiwon, Jisun, Nagyung and Jiheon have a noticeable male fan majority. Out of all of the members, Jiwon has the highest number of male fans (the girlfriend concept sure pays off). 13.4% of all male flovers chose her as their favorite, and Jisun sits closely behind her with 12.9%. Jisun also boasts having the highest proportion of male fans out of all the members, with 61.8% of her fans being male. Nagyung has the next highest proportion after Jisun with 59.2%.
Saerom, Gyuri and Seoyeon have a tie between their male and female fans. Gyuri also has 13.7% of the female vote, the largest of all the members. Chaeyoung is the only member that has more female fans than male. 50.1% of Chaeyoung’s fanbase are female, whereas male flovers make up 43.2% of her fans.
Hayoung is popular among the non-binary flover community, having 19.9% of the non-binary respondents voting for her. Jiheon and Gyuri’s fans come next in popularity with 14.3% and 12.3%, respectively.
3.2 Age Group x Bias
For the most part, the individual distributions for the members resembles the distribution of the overall responses of flovers when looking at the age groups. However, even though the age group of 18-21 year old flovers is the largest (30.0%), as mentioned in part 1.1, three of the members have a higher percentage of 22-25 year old fans: Saerom, Gyuri and Jiwon.
Amongst flovers younger than 14, Saerom appears to be the most popular with 24.0%, while the other girls averaged 9.5% in the youngest age group. Saerom also leads in the 22-25 age group with 14.7%. Jiheon has 24.6% of votes from flovers that are 18-21 years old, making her the most popular member of the largest age group. Despite her loud voice and energetic reactions, Jiwon is favored by the oldest flovers, with 19.5% of flovers over the age of 40 voting for her. The other age groups don’t show a large preference for a single member.
3.3 MBTI x Bias
Does your MBTI influence who you stan? The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality test made up of four categories, each containing two opposite traits that are represented by a single letter: Extrovert (E) vs Introvert (I), Intuition (N) vs Sensing (S), Feeling (F) vs Thinking (T) and Judging (J) vs Perceiving (P). We took each of the eight MBTI traits and analyzed which fromis_9 members are the most popular amongst flovers who possess that trait. That data was then cross-referenced with the bias ranking seen in part 2.1, allowing us to visualize which members get more or less popular based on MBTI traits compared to the overall bias ranking.
Between each trait pair, the more common traits flovers carry (Introvert, Intuition, Feeling and Perceiving) generally showed the same trend as the overall biases. There are still some small deviations, however. For example, Jisun and Seoyeon switch places in popularity in the Introvert rank, with Seoyeon rising above the percent of votes she had in the overall bias ranking. Another difference is that Gyuri and Saerom rise to the top of the list for Feeling flovers.
There are more differences in the bias rankings for the less common traits (Extrovert, Sensing, Thinking and Judging), possibly due to the smaller sample size. Jisun and Chaeyoung have a higher percentage of votes from Extrovert flovers than their respective overall votes. Jisun is the member with the highest level of extroversion, so it should be no surprise that she has the most votes from this personality trait. Gyuri, Jisun and Seoyeon are more popular amongst flovers with the Sensing trait relative to their ranking in the overall bias list.
Marked in red on each member’s graph is their MBTI personality as seen in Channel_9. Saerom and Jiwon have their MBTIs (INTP and INFJ, respectively) as the third largest portion of their fanbase. However, Hayoung is the only member to have her personality type (INFP) match the results of her fans. These results are likely due to the high volume of introverted flovers and these three MBTIs in particular. INFP, INFJ and INTP personality types are the top three among our participants. As the other members’ charts show, all nine of them have INFP as the greatest portion of flovers that voted them as their bias, while INFJ and INTP are always within the top five
3.4 Region x Bias
The countries that flovers inhabit have been divided into six regions: Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and Africa. The continent of Africa was omitted due to the fact there was only one respondent from that region.
Asia and North America make up a large portion of flovers that filled out the survey with 67.0% and 19.2%, respectively. This may explain the more even distribution of biases in these regions. Jiwon has slightly more fans than the other members in North America with 13.4%, while Gyuri has the most votes from flovers in Asia with 12.7%
The remaining regions have more variability in their biases. Gyuri is also the favorite in South America with 16.4%. The second favorite of South America is Seoyeon with 13.1%. In Oceania, Hayoung has 20.2% of the vote – the greatest proportion seen in any of the regions. The flovers of Oceania also have a preference for Jiwon, with 17.0% of fans from this region voting for her. Lastly, Europe favors Saerom (14.1%) and Jisun (14.0%).
